Remote Desert Trip

Remote Desert Trip

Trekking in the Erg Chigaga (also spelled Chegaga) desert offers one of the most authentic and remote Sahara experiences in Morocco. Unlike the more easily accessible Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, Erg Chigaga is considered the “wildest” and most pristine desert, a true wilderness adventure for those seeking solitude and a genuine nomadic experience.

Why Choose an Erg Chigaga Trek?
Remoteness and Authenticity: Located about 60 km off-road from the town of M’hamid, Erg Chigaga is only accessible by 4×4 or on a long camel trek. This remoteness means it is far less crowded and commercialized than other desert destinations.

Vast and Diverse Landscape: The Erg Chigaga dunes are the largest and tallest in Morocco, stretching over 40 km. The trek is not just about sand; you’ll also pass through rocky plains (hammada), barren plateaus, and oases, showcasing the varied faces of the Sahara.

Ultimate Stargazing: With minimal light pollution and a wide-open sky, the stargazing opportunities in Erg Chigaga are unparalleled.

Deeper Cultural Immersion: The isolation of the region means you’re more likely to have a deeper, more personal connection with your nomadic guides, who have a profound knowledge of the desert and its traditions.

Typical Itinerary
A standard Erg Chigaga trek is a multi-day trip, usually starting from Marrakech or Ouarzazate. The journey itself is a significant part of the adventure.

Day 1: Journey to the Desert: The trip begins with a long scenic drive, often breaking up the journey with overnight stops. From Marrakech, you will cross the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass and travel through the Draa Valley, with its stunning kasbahs and palm groves. The journey to the desert’s edge, M’hamid, can take a full day.

Trekking Days (2 to 5 days): The trek itself starts from M’hamid. Depending on the length of your tour, you will spend several days trekking through the desert. Your main luggage will be carried by camels, so you only need a small daypack. You can choose to walk alongside the camels or ride them, with the pace adjusted to your preference.

Desert Camp: Each night is spent in a traditional Berber desert camp, which can range from a basic wild camp to a more luxurious one with private tents. You’ll enjoy a delicious dinner under the stars, listen to traditional music around a campfire, and witness spectacular sunsets and sunrises.

Return Journey: After the trek, you will return to Marrakech (or another city) by 4×4, often taking a different route through Foum Zguid, creating a scenic loop.

When to Go
The best time for an Erg Chigaga trek is from October to May.

Autumn (October-November): The weather is pleasant, with comfortable daytime temperatures and cooler evenings.

Winter (December-February): Days are mild, but nights can be very cold, even dropping to freezing. This season is perfect for clear skies and stargazing if you are prepared for the cold.

Spring (March-May): Temperatures start to rise, making it an excellent time for trekking. The desert may even experience rare blooms after rainfall.

Summer (June-August): The heat is intense, with temperatures often exceeding 45°C (113°F). Most tours operate only in the early morning and late evening, and many camps close. This period is generally not recommended for trekking.
